NYC Mayor Mamdani launches 30% discount grocery basket program

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday a city‑wide initiative to sell discounted grocery baskets at municipal retail locations. The program, slated to launch in early September, will offer pre‑assembled packages of staple foods—including fresh produce, dairy, grains and protein—at prices up to 30 percent lower than market rates. The mayor’s office said the baskets will be available at the Department of Sanitation’s “Green Market” kiosks and at select community centers that operate city‑run stores.

The plan targets neighborhoods with the highest rates of food insecurity, as identified by the latest city health department data. Eligibility will be open to all residents, with additional vouchers provided to households enrolled in SNAP or other assistance programs. Funding for the discounted pricing comes from a combination of municipal budget allocations and a grant from the state’s Food Access Initiative. City officials expect the baskets to serve roughly 150,000 families during the first year and to reduce average grocery costs for participants by an estimated $150 per month.

Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the effort complements existing anti‑hunger strategies, such as the expanded food pantry network and the recent partnership with local farms. The administration will monitor sales data and consumer feedback to assess the program’s impact and consider scaling it to additional sites. If successful, the discounted grocery basket model could become a permanent feature of New York City’s approach to combating food insecurity.
