NYC Mayor bans AI for elementary and middle school students, adds AI literacy for high schools

New York City’s Department of Education announced that, beginning this academic year, elementary and middle school students will be prohibited from accessing generative artificial‑intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, DALL‑E, and similar platforms. The restriction applies to all public schools citywide and is intended to prevent unsupervised use of AI that could compromise academic integrity or expose younger learners to unvetted content. District officials indicated that the ban will be enforced through network filters and staff monitoring, and that teachers are instructed to redirect any AI‑related inquiries toward approved instructional resources.

In contrast, the department will introduce AI literacy curricula for high‑school students, coupled with supervised pilot programs that allow limited, teacher‑guided interaction with generative AI. These initiatives aim to equip older students with critical understanding of AI capabilities, ethical considerations, and responsible usage while maintaining oversight. The rollout is scheduled for the fall, with evaluation metrics to assess student outcomes and inform potential expansion of the program in subsequent years.
