Norway Football Federation urges FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign

The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) announced on Tuesday that it has formally called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, citing a series of governance and transparency concerns that the federation says jeopardise the sport’s integrity. In a written statement addressed to the FIFA Council, the NFF argued that recent decisions made by Infantino and the executive committee – including the handling of the women’s World Cup schedule, the allocation of future tournament hosting rights, and perceived interference in national association affairs – conflict with FIFA’s own statutes and undermine confidence among member associations.

The NFF’s demand follows growing international criticism of Infantino’s leadership, which has been scrutinised for perceived conflicts of interest, the handling of the 2022 Qatar World Cup legacy, and the perceived marginalisation of women’s football. Norway’s governing body highlighted specific incidents, such as the postponement of the 2025 women’s tournament qualifiers and the lack of clear communication regarding the 2030 World Cup bid process, as evidence of systemic issues. The federation also referenced recent calls from other national associations and former officials for greater accountability within FIFA’s hierarchy.

The request will be placed on the agenda of the upcoming FIFA Council meeting, where member representatives are expected to discuss the matter and consider any procedural steps. Infantino has not yet issued a public response, and the NFF indicated it will monitor the council’s deliberations closely, emphasizing that any decision should reflect the collective interests of the global football community.
