North Macedonia Reports Eighth West Nile Virus Death

North Macedonia confirmed on Sunday that it has recorded its eighth death from West Nile virus, a mosquito‑borne infection that has been spreading across several European countries this season. The fatality, reported by the Ministry of Health, brings the country’s total cases to a number that underscores the growing public health concern in the region.

West Nile virus, typically transmitted by infected Culex mosquitoes, has seen an uptick in human cases throughout Europe, with outbreaks reported in Italy, France, and Spain. While most infections are asymptomatic or produce mild flu‑like symptoms, the virus can cause severe neurological disease in a minority of patients, particularly older adults and those with weakened immune systems. Health authorities in North Macedonia have intensified surveillance and mosquito‑control measures in an effort to curb further spread.
