Normandy D-Day Beaches to Join UNESCO World Heritage List

Normandy’s D‑Day landing beaches are poised to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a milestone that would formally recognise their “outstanding universal value” and elevate their international profile. The designation, which could be announced by the UN’s cultural agency between July 24 and 27, would follow a project that began almost two decades ago and would include all five beaches where Allied forces landed on June 6, 1944, as well as the artificial harbour that was constructed on one of them.

The potential listing would highlight the historical significance of the beaches and the engineering feats of the wartime infrastructure, underscoring their importance to the collective memory of World War II. The decision is expected to bring renewed attention to the sites, encouraging preservation efforts and potentially boosting heritage tourism.
