Noel Gallagher praises Johnny Marr's guitar enthusiasm

The indie rock group The Velvet Echoes announced that they have borrowed a guitar belonging to former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. The instrument, a 1978 Fender Telecaster, was famously featured on the cover of Oasis’ debut single “Supersonic” in 1994 and has since become a sought‑after relic among collectors and musicians alike. The Velvet Echoes will use the guitar in the recording of their forthcoming EP, which is slated for release later this year.

Marr’s guitar was originally loaned to the members of Oasis for the photo shoot of “Supersonic,” a gesture that highlighted the camaraderie between the two bands during the early 1990s Britpop era. The Velvet Echoes’ frontman, Liam Hart, said the band was honored to be entrusted with the instrument and that it will be played on the track “Midnight City.” The band’s manager confirmed that the guitar will be returned to Marr’s collection after the EP’s production is complete.

The borrowing of this historic instrument underscores the continuing influence of 1980s and 1990s British rock on contemporary artists.
