NISAR L‑Band Radar Images East Antarctic Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja
Earth‑orbiting NISAR (NASA‑ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), a joint U.S.–India satellite equipped with an L‑band radar, has captured a high‑resolution image of Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a rocky mountaintop protruding from the ice sheet in East Antarctica. The radar data reveal the nunatak emerging from a fast‑moving stream of ice that flows northeast toward the Southern Ocean, providing a clear visual of how solid ground can interrupt the otherwise uniform glacial surface.
Analysis of the NISAR imagery shows that the nunatak acts as a physical barrier, generating localized stress fields that heavily fracture the surrounding ice. The resulting crevasse patterns and surface deformation are being studied to improve models of ice dynamics and to assess the potential impact of such stress concentrations on the stability of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The observations underscore the value of synthetic aperture radar in monitoring remote polar regions and contribute to a broader understanding of how topographic features influence ice flow and, ultimately, sea‑level rise.
