Nintendo Switch 2 firmware update adds VRR support in TV mode

Nintendo has rolled out firmware version 23.0.0 for its Switch 2 console, finally delivering the variable refresh rate (VRR) support that was promised for docked, TV‑mode play. VRR synchronizes a display’s refresh cycle with a game’s frame output, smoothing motion and reducing screen tearing, a capability already standard on competing platforms such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. The update activates VRR only when the Switch 2 is placed in its dock, addressing the instability in frame rates that some titles exhibit and aligning the handheld’s performance with current generation expectations.

In addition to VRR, the patch introduces a quick‑settings toggle for “handheld boost mode,” allowing users to prioritize performance while playing away from the dock.
