Nigeria Organizes Mass Weddings to Ease Marriage Costs

Nigeria’s federal government has launched a mass‑wedding program aimed at easing the financial burden of marriage for low‑income families. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, seeks to provide free or heavily subsidised ceremonies, dowry assistance, and related legal services to couples who would otherwise struggle to meet the high costs associated with traditional Nigerian nuptial rites.

Since its rollout, the program has already facilitated weddings for more than 3,000 couples across several states, with the government covering up to 80 % of the expenses, including venue, catering, and officiating fees. The Ministry reports that the initiative not only reduces economic strain but also promotes social cohesion and reduces the incidence of forced or rushed marriages. Officials say the program is part of a broader effort to improve gender equality and support vulnerable households.

The government plans to expand the program in the coming months, allocating additional funds for rural outreach and post‑marriage support services such as financial literacy workshops. Stakeholders view the mass‑wedding scheme as a pragmatic step toward reducing poverty‑related barriers to marriage, while also addressing broader social challenges linked to high matrimonial costs.
