Niger military says regaining control after attempted mutiny

Niger’s armed forces announced on Tuesday that they are re‑establishing authority in the capital, Niamey, following a brief mutiny that erupted after reports of gunfire in the city. The disturbance, which began in the early hours, prompted the deployment of additional troops to key government installations and prompted security officials to issue a public statement confirming that order was being restored.

Military spokesperson Colonel Amadou Bako said units had secured the main avenues and that the mutiny’s participants were being detained.
