Nicaragua President Ortega announces no further elections

Nicaragua’s president Daniel Ortega, 80, announced that the country will not hold any further elections, stating the decision is intended to “build a wall” against the opposition. Ortega, who has led the nation since 2007, said the move will be implemented through legislation crafted in cooperation with the legislature, which is dominated by his party. The proposed legal framework is aimed at preventing opposition groups from gaining political power.

The announcement follows years of criticism from international observers regarding the erosion of democratic institutions in Nicaragua. By eliminating future electoral contests and enacting restrictive laws, Ortega’s administration seeks to consolidate its control and limit the capacity of dissenting voices to challenge the government.
