New technology aims to make glued and labeled paper recyclable
Labels and adhesives have long posed a challenge for paper recyclers, as the residues they leave can contaminate pulp and reduce the quality of recycled material. According to industry data, up to 15 percent of paper waste is diverted from recycling streams because of difficult‑to‑remove labeling, prompting concerns among manufacturers and waste‑management agencies about the sustainability of current packaging practices.
A consortium of researchers from the University of Michigan and the startup CleanPaper Technologies has unveiled a new separation system that combines a low‑temperature steam treatment with a biodegradable adhesive formulation. The steam process softens conventional glue bonds without damaging the paper fibers, allowing automated peel‑off of labels, while the biodegradable adhesive dissolves in a mild aqueous solution during the pulping stage. Pilot trials at three municipal recycling facilities in the United States reported a 30 percent increase in usable paper recovery and a 20 percent reduction in water usage compared with standard de‑inking methods. The technology is slated for commercial rollout later this year, with additional testing planned for mixed‑material waste streams.
If widely adopted, the system could improve overall paper recycling rates and lessen the environmental impact of label waste, aligning with regulatory targets for circular economies in North America and Europe. Industry observers note that the approach may also lower processing costs for recyclers, potentially encouraging broader implementation across the sector.
