New model forecasts Red Sea fish invasions into Mediterranean
More than 120 fish species have crossed from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean since the Suez Canal opened over 150 years ago, reshaping the region’s marine biodiversity. Tel Aviv University scientists have now created a statistical model that forecasts which species are most likely to undertake the next migration. The model draws on long‑term fish census data, oceanographic variables, and species’ biological traits to estimate migration probabilities.
The research team used a combination of machine‑learning algorithms and ecological niche modeling to analyze patterns of past movements. By incorporating factors such as water temperature, salinity gradients, and life‑history characteristics, the model can rank species by their likelihood of successful passage through the canal. The findings, published in a peer‑reviewed journal, offer a tool for marine managers to anticipate and monitor potential invasive arrivals.
If validated in further studies, the predictive framework could help authorities in the Mediterranean and Red Sea regions prepare for ecological impacts, guide monitoring efforts, and inform policy decisions regarding canal operations and marine conservation.
