New Mexico Democrats Urge Apple, Google to Keep State Name on Maps

New Mexico’s Democratic delegation sent a formal letter to Apple and Google on Thursday, urging the tech giants to refuse President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename the state “New America” on their digital map services. The lawmakers, representing the state’s congressional districts, cited concerns that the change would misrepresent the state’s identity and confuse users worldwide.

The request follows a Sunday post by President Trump on Truth Social in which he shared an edited map of the state, crossing out “New Mexico” and replacing it with “New America.” The image sparked backlash from state officials and residents, who noted that the alteration could affect everything from navigation apps to official documents. The Democratic members emphasized that the renaming is not supported by any legal authority and could undermine the state’s cultural and historical heritage.

In their letter, the lawmakers asked Apple and Google to maintain the current name on all platforms and to notify the administration of any future attempts to alter the state’s designation. They added that the state’s name is protected under federal law, and any change would require a formal legislative process. The request comes as the tech companies review updates to their mapping services ahead of a scheduled rollout later this month.
