Neuroimaging study shows psilocybin boosts brain connectivity to external environment
A new neuroimaging investigation challenges the common perception that psychedelics isolate users from reality. Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to monitor brain activity in participants who received a controlled dose of psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in certain mushrooms. The study measured changes in functional connectivity across multiple brain networks and found that, contrary to expectations, psilocybin increased the integration of neural signals with external sensory input, suggesting a heightened coupling between the brain and the surrounding environment.
The findings indicate that psilocybin may promote a state of enhanced perceptual awareness rather than pure disengagement from external stimuli.
