Natural Emissions Could Amplify Global Warming by 30%
A new scientific paper warns that natural emissions of methane and carbon dioxide are amplifying the climate crisis, potentially adding up to 30 % more warming than currently projected. The study, published in a peer‑reviewed journal, shows that rising global temperatures—primarily driven by fossil‑fuel combustion—are altering forests, wetlands and tundra in ways that trigger the release of greenhouse gases previously locked in vegetation and soils.
The researchers highlight several key feedback mechanisms. Thawing permafrost in high‑latitude regions is freeing methane and CO₂ that had been trapped in frozen organic matter. Simultaneously, drier forests and wetlands are experiencing more frequent and intense wildfires, which release large amounts of carbon stored in trees and peat. In addition, warming lakes are accelerating the decomposition of aquatic sediments, further contributing to methane emissions. Together, these natural sources are creating a self‑reinforcing cycle that could accelerate global temperature rise.
The findings underscore the urgency of reducing anthropogenic emissions and managing natural carbon sinks.
