National study finds over half of U.S. adults have experienced physical violence, nearly half sexual violence

A nationwide survey released this week, the U.S. National Study on Violence Experiences Across the Lifespan (USVEX), indicates that violence is pervasive among American adults. The study found that more than 50 percent of U.S. adults have endured physical violence at some point in their lives, while nearly 45 percent report having experienced sexual violence. Researchers compiled data from a representative sample of adults across all states, providing the most comprehensive picture to date of how widespread these forms of victimization are.

The USVEX analysis also highlighted pronounced disparities in exposure to violence, with higher rates reported among low‑income populations, racial and ethnic minorities, and individuals with limited access to health care. Moreover, the study documented strong correlations between experiences of physical or sexual violence and subsequent economic hardship, mental‑health challenges, and substance‑use disorders. Policymakers and service providers are being urged to address these intersecting issues to mitigate the long‑term social and health impacts of violence in the United States.
