National Mall Security Enhanced for 2020 July 4th Celebrations

Security measures for the Fourth of July celebration on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall this year have been significantly heightened following the designation of the event as a “National Special Security Event” (NSSE), a classification typically reserved for major federal gatherings such as presidential inaugurations and state funerals. The change reflects the inclusion of a speech by former President Donald Trump, who will address the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The U.S. Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security have coordinated with local law enforcement to implement enhanced protocols, including expanded screening checkpoints, restricted vehicle access, and increased surveillance, to address heightened security concerns amid ongoing political tensions.

The National Park Service has adjusted public access to the National Mall, limiting entry points and reducing capacity to facilitate security operations.
