NASA to launch Roman Space Telescope on SpaceX Falcon Heavy

NASA is set to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center, initiating a multi‑year observatory mission. The telescope, named after the agency’s first female astronomer, will be positioned at the Sun–Earth L2 point, where it will begin a comprehensive survey of the universe that promises to generate the most expansive cosmic map to date.

Equipped with a field of view roughly 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, Roman will conduct wide‑field imaging and spectroscopy to detect distant exoplanets, track supernova explosions, and investigate the distribution of dark matter and the influence of dark energy on cosmic expansion. The mission, scheduled to operate for at least five years, is expected to provide critical data for understanding the fundamental structure and evolution of the cosmos.
