NASA's Roman Space Telescope launches toward L2 for dark matter, dark energy research
NASA’s Roman Space Telescope has embarked on a million‑mile journey to the Sun–Earth Lagrange point L2, where it will begin a sweeping survey of the cosmos. The mission is designed to probe the universe’s most elusive components—dark matter, dark energy—and to search for distant exoplanets, offering a new window into the structure and evolution of the universe.
Roman will operate at a survey speed roughly 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope, producing a torrent of data at a rate of about 1.4 terabytes per day. Its advanced instrumentation will map vast swaths of sky with unprecedented depth and resolution, enabling astronomers to detect faint signals that could reveal unexpected phenomena or challenge existing cosmological models.
