NASA Plans Habitable Worlds Observatory to Detect Alien Oceans
The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that its forthcoming Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) will be equipped to detect the subtle “glint” of reflected light from liquid water on the surfaces of potentially habitable exoplanets. The observatory, slated for launch in the mid‑2030s, will use a 12‑meter segmented mirror and advanced coronagraphs to suppress starlight and isolate faint planetary signals. By measuring the wavelength‑dependent brightness variations as a planet orbits its star, scientists expect to identify the characteristic increase in reflected light at visible wavelengths that indicates a global ocean or large bodies of liquid water.
Beyond confirming the presence of surface water, the HWO’s high‑contrast imaging and spectroscopy capabilities are projected to reveal atmospheric composition, cloud coverage, and surface albedo patterns on worlds within the habitable zone of nearby stars. The mission’s data will help refine models of planetary habitability and guide future targeted studies with next‑generation telescopes. As the observatory moves toward final design and funding approval, its potential to transform our understanding of exoplanetary environments remains a central focus for the astronomical community.
