NASA launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to study dark matter and dark energy
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off successfully after a protracted development period marked by funding challenges and a recent renaming. The launch places the observatory on a three‑month, one‑million‑mile cruise to the second Sun‑Earth Lagrange point (L2), a stable orbit beyond the Moon that offers an unobstructed view of deep space. From L2, Roman will begin an unprecedented survey of the cosmos, leveraging a field of view that is 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Equipped with a 300‑megapixel infrared camera, the Roman Telescope can scan the sky up to 1,000 times faster than its predecessor, enabling large‑scale studies of dark energy, galaxy evolution, and the early universe. Its onboard coronagraph system is designed to suppress starlight, allowing direct imaging of exoplanets—including smaller, older, and colder worlds that have eluded detection so far. NASA expects the mission to expand humanity’s astronomical knowledge and to lay groundwork for future space‑based observatories.
