NASA Calls for Proposals to Accelerate Lunar Surface Technologies
NASA announced on Tuesday, September 8, that it is inviting proposals to advance the technology and infrastructure required for a future Moon Base at the lunar South Pole. The solicitation, part of the agency’s Artemis program, targets critical capability gaps that must be bridged before sustained human presence can be achieved, including power generation, oxygen extraction, and the production of construction materials directly on the Moon.
The call seeks innovative solutions that enable reliable, long‑term power systems—such as solar arrays or nuclear options—capable of operating in the extreme temperature swings of the polar environment. It also prioritizes technologies for extracting oxygen from regolith or water ice, a key resource for life support and fuel. In‑situ resource utilization (ISRU) methods for producing building materials, such as regolith‑based bricks or composite structures, are likewise emphasized, as they can reduce the mass that must be launched from Earth.
By soliciting proposals from industry, academia, and national laboratories, NASA aims to accelerate development of these critical systems and close the remaining technology gaps. Successful projects will lay the groundwork for a sustainable lunar base, supporting both scientific exploration and future commercial activities in the Moon’s most promising region.
