Myanmar airport shut after reported drone attack, government blames rebels

The military government of Myanmar has attributed a recent armed assault to the pro‑democracy rebel groups it has been fighting since the February 2021 coup that ousted the elected civilian administration. In a statement released on Monday, the junta’s spokesperson said the attack, which took place in the northern Shan State near the town of Lashio, resulted in the deaths of several soldiers and the destruction of a supply convoy.

According to the official report, the rebels, identified as members of the People's Defense Forces (PDF), launched the operation at dawn, employing small arms and improvised explosive devices. The military claimed that the assault was part of a coordinated campaign by the PDF and allied ethnic armed organizations to destabilize government forces in the region. The junta has vowed to intensify its counter‑insurgency operations, citing the incident as evidence of the rebels’ continued threat to national security.

The incident underscores the ongoing armed conflict that has persisted for more than three years, with both sides accusing each other of violations and civilian harm.
