Multistate Cyclospora Outbreak Linked to Lettuce

Michigan health officials have identified lettuce and other salad greens as the leading suspected source of a growing multistate outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes watery diarrhea. The outbreak, which has been reported across several states, is linked to contaminated fresh produce that is widely consumed in salads and other dishes.

Investigations by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have traced the parasite to several batches of leafy greens sold in grocery stores and farmers’ markets. Patients across the country have reported symptoms ranging from mild abdominal discomfort to severe, persistent diarrhea, prompting public health agencies to issue warnings and to collaborate with food distributors to identify and remove potentially contaminated products.

Health officials advise consumers to wash lettuce and salad greens thoroughly under running water, and to avoid consuming raw or lightly cooked produce that may have been contaminated. They also recommend seeking medical care if symptoms persist beyond a few days, and to report any illness associated with fresh produce to local health departments.
