Mount Etna ash forces suspension of arrivals at Catania airport

Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, the main international gateway for the eastern part of Sicily, continues to play a pivotal role in connecting one of Italy’s most visited tourist regions with the wider European and global air network. Situated just a few kilometres south of the city of Catania, the airport handles a mix of scheduled and charter flights operated by legacy carriers, low‑cost airlines, and seasonal operators, linking destinations such as Rome, Milan, London, Munich, and numerous Mediterranean resorts.

In 2023 the airport recorded close to 8 million passengers, reflecting sustained growth in leisure travel to Sicily’s historic sites, coastal resorts, and culinary attractions. Recent infrastructure upgrades—including an expanded terminal, modernized baggage handling systems, and enhanced runway lighting—have increased capacity and reduced turnaround times, supporting the region’s tourism‑driven economy. As Sicily remains a top destination for both domestic and international visitors, Catania International Airport is expected to maintain its status as a critical hub for the island’s continued economic and cultural vitality.
