Motorboat noise reduces growth and predator evasion in reef fish, study finds
A new study published this week shows that motorboat noise can stunt the growth of reef fish and reduce their ability to evade predators. Researchers at the University of Queensland exposed spiny chromis (a common fish of the Great Barrier Reef) to recordings of motorboat noise or natural reef sounds while the fish were embryos and shortly after hatching. The fish that experienced the louder, artificial noise grew to a smaller adult size and displayed poorer escape responses when confronted with simulated predators.
The experiment, which involved controlled acoustic playback in laboratory tanks, revealed that the noise exposure disrupted normal developmental processes. Spiny chromis that grew up in the noisy environment were not only smaller but also less agile, making them more vulnerable to predation. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that anthropogenic sound pollution can have lasting biological effects on marine ecosystems, particularly on species that rely on acoustic cues for survival.
These results underscore the need for stricter management of marine noise, especially in high‑traffic areas around coral reefs. Future research will aim to determine whether similar effects occur in other reef species and to evaluate the long‑term ecological consequences of chronic boat noise on reef communities.
