Morocco earthquake survivors still in tents three years after 2023 quake

Reconstruction efforts in Morocco have advanced steadily since the magnitude‑6.8 earthquake struck the country in September 2023, but the pace of progress remains uneven. Three years on, the government reports that more than 12,000 homes have been rebuilt and key infrastructure—including roads, schools and health facilities—has been restored in the hardest‑hit provinces of Al Haouz, Marrakech‑Safi and Souss‑Massa. International partners and NGOs have contributed financing and technical support, and the Ministry of Housing says that the majority of displaced families have been rehoused in permanent structures.

Despite these gains, a significant number of survivors continue to live in temporary tents, and local opinion is split over the adequacy of state assistance. Residents of remote villages argue that the distribution of aid has been slow and that many newly built houses do not meet pre‑quake living standards, while officials maintain that the current program meets the needs identified in official assessments. The ongoing disparity underscores the challenge of fully transitioning from emergency relief to long‑term recovery, and authorities have pledged to accelerate housing projects and expand social support in the coming months.
