Moldova appoints new prime minister to lead EU membership drive

Moldovan political newcomer Vasile Tofan has been appointed to lead the country’s government, inheriting the administration’s commitment to secure European Union membership by 2030. Tofan, a former economist and member of the pro‑European Reform Alliance, won a parliamentary majority in the June elections and was sworn in as prime minister on Monday. His cabinet, composed largely of technocrats and reform‑oriented legislators, pledged to continue the accession roadmap outlined by the previous administration, which includes aligning national legislation with EU standards, strengthening the rule of law, and combating corruption.

The new government faces the task of advancing reforms while navigating domestic political fragmentation and external pressures from Russia, which has historically opposed Moldova’s western integration. International partners, including the European Commission, have welcomed Tofan’s appointment, noting that continuity in policy is essential for meeting the 2030 target.
