Modified BCG Vaccine Shows Enhanced Protection in Preclinical TB Study
Researchers at the Centenary Institute and the University of Sydney have engineered a modified version of the Bacillus Calmette‑Guérin (BCG) tuberculosis vaccine that delivers stronger and more sustained protection in pre‑clinical mouse studies. The new formulation builds on the long‑used BCG strain but incorporates targeted changes designed to enhance its immunogenicity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
In controlled experiments, the altered vaccine produced a markedly higher level of protective immunity compared with the standard BCG, with effects lasting longer in the animal model. The results suggest that the modifications may overcome some of the limitations that have historically reduced BCG’s effectiveness in diverse human populations, offering a promising new strategy for TB prevention.
While the data are encouraging, the researchers emphasize that further studies are required to confirm safety and efficacy in humans. If subsequent trials succeed, the modified BCG could become a more reliable tool in the global fight against tuberculosis.
