Minnesota Attorney General sues Texas governor to compel ICE agent extradition

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Tuesday formally requested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement transfer an agent who is under investigation for allegedly providing false statements about a nonfatal shooting incident. The request follows a federal inquiry into the August 2023 encounter in which an ICE officer discharged a firearm during a detention‑center raid in Minneapolis, injuring a detainee but not causing a fatality. According to the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General, the agent is accused of mischaracterizing the circumstances of the shooting in internal reports and to supervisory officials.

Ellison’s letter to the Department of Homeland Security cited concerns that the agent’s continued presence could compromise the integrity of the investigation and undermine public confidence in law‑enforcement accountability. He urged that the agent be placed on administrative leave and reassigned pending the outcome of the probe, which is expected to examine whether the use of force complied with agency policy and whether the alleged false statements constitute a violation of federal statutes. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded publicly, and the investigation remains ongoing.
