Microsoft Cuts Xbox Cloud Gaming Hours for Ultimate Subscribers
Microsoft announced today that it will impose new limits on Xbox Cloud Gaming, a shift that comes less than a year after the service was expanded to all Xbox Game Pass tiers. The change will take effect in November, capping cloud play to 15 hours per month for Ultimate subscribers, 10 hours for Premium members, and 5 hours for those on the Essential plan. The company noted that the decision reflects a “meaningful change” for players who regularly use cloud gaming, and it expects the new limits to affect a significant portion of its user base.
Previously, all Game Pass plans—including Premium and Essential—offered unlimited cloud gaming. The new restrictions will require subscribers to manage their playtime more carefully, potentially prompting some to upgrade to higher tiers or adjust their gaming habits. Microsoft’s blog post emphasized that the limits are part of an ongoing effort to balance service costs and user demand, and that the company will monitor the impact closely.
With the limits taking effect next month, gamers will need to plan their cloud sessions accordingly. The announcement signals a broader trend of subscription services tightening usage caps to sustain infrastructure and pricing models, and it will likely influence how players choose their Game Pass tier moving forward.
