Mexico seeks US prosecutions over migrant deaths

Mexico’s foreign ministry announced that it will formally request both state and federal prosecutions in the United States over a series of recent deaths involving Mexican migrants. The move follows a series of incidents in which migrants—many of them Mexican nationals—died while in U.S. custody or while attempting to cross the border, prompting Mexico to seek legal accountability for what it describes as “negligence and violations of human rights.” Officials said the request will be filed with relevant state attorneys general and with the U.S. Department of Justice, and will be accompanied by documentation of the cases and testimonies from affected families.

The Mexican government indicated that the prosecutions are intended to ensure that responsible parties are held to account and to deter future fatalities. It also pledged to cooperate with U.S. authorities in any investigations and to provide support to the families of the deceased. The initiative underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two countries to address migrant safety and to strengthen bilateral mechanisms for handling immigration‑related incidents.
