Meta ordered to remove UK deepfake videos after oversight board criticism

Meta’s internal oversight board, often referred to as its “Supreme Court,” has ordered the social‑media giant to remove two AI‑generated deepfake videos that appeared on Facebook. One video falsely depicted a Labour Party councillor from Scotland delivering inflammatory remarks about refugees, while the other showed a young Muslim campaign volunteer giving health advice while engaging in absurd exercises and consuming junk food. The board concluded that both videos violated the platform’s policies and should not have remained accessible to users.

In addition to the takedown directive, the board instructed Meta to strengthen its mechanisms for detecting and eliminating AI‑generated misinformation. The ruling underscores growing regulatory and public pressure on technology companies to curb the spread of synthetic media that can mislead audiences and damage reputations. Meta has indicated it will comply with the order and review its existing safeguards to better address deepfake content in the future.
