Meta Faces Class Action Over AI Training Data Use

A proposed class‑action lawsuit has been filed against Meta Platforms, alleging that the company illegally harvested photographs from Facebook and Instagram users to train its AI image‑generation models and to develop an unreleased facial‑recognition feature known as “NameTag.” The complaint claims that Meta used these images without the consent of the individuals depicted, violating privacy laws and the platform’s own data‑use policies.

According to the suit, the harvested photos were fed into machine‑learning algorithms to improve the quality and realism of the company’s generative‑AI tools, while also providing the data set needed to build the NameTag system. The plaintiffs argue that the company’s actions constitute a breach of user privacy and a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, as the images were used without proper licensing or authorization.

Meta has not yet responded to the allegations. If the lawsuit proceeds, it could prompt a broader examination of how tech firms source training data for AI systems and the legal safeguards required to protect user privacy.
