Melioidosis Cases Surge in Townsville After Record Rainfall
A recent study analysing the sharp rise in melioidosis cases during Townsville’s record‑setting rainfall of the 2024‑25 wet season has strengthened calls for enhanced preparedness among emergency department teams. The research, published in *Emergency Medicine Australasia*, examined hospital admissions and identified a clear correlation between prolonged heavy rainfall and increased incidence of the disease, which is caused by the soil‑borne bacterium *Burkholderia pseudomallei*.
Lead author Dr Colin Banks, an emergency physician at Townsville University Hospital and associate professor at James Cook University, highlighted that the findings support earlier recommendations for emergency care staff to adopt stricter infection control protocols and to maintain heightened clinical suspicion for melioidosis during periods of intense rainfall. The study also underscored the importance of rapid diagnostic testing and early antimicrobial therapy to reduce morbidity and mortality.
In light of these results, local health authorities are reviewing emergency department guidelines to incorporate the study’s recommendations, aiming to improve patient outcomes during future wet seasons. The research serves as a timely reminder of the link between extreme weather events and infectious disease risk in tropical regions.
