Mayors could be given powers to oversee water companies

The government has announced plans to establish nine new regional bodies that will oversee the water sector across the country. These entities will be tasked with strategic planning, setting performance objectives, and ensuring that water companies meet their regulatory and service commitments.

Under the proposal, each regional body will work closely with local authorities, environmental agencies, and industry stakeholders to develop region‑specific targets for water quality, supply reliability, and investment in infrastructure. The bodies will also have the authority to monitor compliance, review company performance, and impose sanctions or corrective measures if standards are not met. The move is intended to replace the current national framework with a more localized approach that can better address the diverse needs of different areas.

If approved, the new regional bodies would be established in the coming fiscal year, with the first appointments expected by the end of the year. The government says the change will enhance accountability and drive improvements in service delivery while maintaining a clear national policy framework.
