MASLD Linked to Eosinophilic Esophagitis Risk
A recent study published online on July 22 in the *Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology* reports a significant association between metabolic dysfunction‑associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). The research highlights a link between two conditions that have traditionally been considered distinct, suggesting that patients with MASLD may be at increased risk for developing EoE.
The study, which analyzed clinical data from a large patient cohort, found that the prevalence of EoE was markedly higher among individuals diagnosed with MASLD compared with those without liver disease. The authors emphasize that the association remained significant after adjusting for common confounding factors such as age, sex, and body mass index, underscoring a potential shared pathophysiological mechanism.
These findings may prompt clinicians to monitor for esophageal symptoms in patients with MASLD and encourage further research into the underlying mechanisms that connect metabolic liver dysfunction and eosinophilic inflammation of the esophagus.
