Mangione's State Murder Trial Postponed After Federal Guilty Plea

A federal court heard arguments from the defense of Joseph Mangione, who has already pleaded guilty to the stalking and fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024. Mangione’s attorneys contend that he is being charged twice for the same “criminal transaction,” arguing that the state case should be dismissed on the grounds of double jeopardy.

The defense’s position is that the state prosecution and the federal case are essentially identical, involving the same alleged acts and evidence. By pleading guilty to the federal charges, Mangione seeks to avoid the additional burden of a separate state trial, asserting that the duplicate prosecution violates constitutional protections against double jeopardy.

Judge Maria Torres, who presides over the case, will decide whether the state charges can be dismissed. The outcome will determine whether Mangione faces a single federal prosecution or both state and federal proceedings for the same alleged crime.
