Malaysia plans September repatriation of Myanmar nationals

Malaysia currently hosts more than 215,000 refugees and asylum seekers who are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The country’s refugee population includes a significant number of individuals from conflict‑affected regions, with the largest group being the Rohingya from Myanmar. According to UNHCR data, over 126,000 Rohingya are registered in Malaysia, making them the country’s largest refugee community.

The figures reflect Malaysia’s role as a transit and destination country for displaced persons, despite the nation not being a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention. Registration with UNHCR allows refugees to access limited humanitarian assistance and legal protection, though many remain in a state of legal uncertainty.
