Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner accused of rape by former girlfriend
A woman who previously accused Maine Senate nominee Graham Platner, a Democrat, of sexually assaulting her during a relationship nearly five years ago said Monday that she now regards the incident as rape. In an interview with CNN’s “The Lead,” 41‑year‑old Jenny Racicot described the alleged encounter, which first came to public attention through a Politico report. Racicot said the assault occurred while the two were dating and that she had previously described the episode as sexual assault, but has since concluded it meets the legal definition of rape.
The allegation resurfaces as Platner’s nomination proceeds, prompting renewed scrutiny of his past conduct. State officials have not yet commented on the new characterization, and the Senate’s confirmation process is expected to address the claims alongside the nominee’s qualifications. No criminal charges have been filed, and the matter remains under investigation pending further legal and procedural developments.
