Louisiana Lawmakers Weaken Community Air Monitoring Amid Industry Pressure
Residents living near heavily industrialized areas in Louisiana are facing increased health risks due to a lack of public air monitoring. The state's decision to restrict the use of community-collected air samples has further exacerbated the issue. Kimbrelle Kyereh, a resident of St Rose, has been dealing with the consequences of living near massive chemical storage tanks. The noxious fumes emanating from these facilities have caused her and her family to experience headaches, nausea, and insomnia. In an effort to gather data on the air quality, Kyereh began collecting samples in her yard for a local environmental justice group. However, the passing of an industry-backed law in 2023 sharply restricted how this data could be used, rendering it largely ineffective.
The lack of public air monitors in Louisiana is a pressing concern. Ten of the state's heaviest air-polluting facilities operate without a single public air monitor within five miles. These facilities, including Dow Chemical's plastics factory in Plaquemine, release a range of toxic pollutants, including ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen. The nearby air monitoring station measures only ozone, failing to account for the numerous hazardous chemicals emitted by these facilities. The absence of public monitors for ammonia is particularly alarming, given that CF Industries' Donaldsonville plant emits over 7 million pounds of the hazardous chemical annually. Furthermore, the three chemicals that researchers have concluded account for the large majority of total cancer risk in the area – ethylene oxide, chloroprene, and formaldehyde – are not monitored by the state at all.
The weakening of community air monitoring in Louisiana has significant implications for public health and environmental justice. As residents continue to bear the brunt of industrial pollution, it is essential that lawmakers prioritize the installation of public air monitors and the collection of accurate air quality data. This would enable communities to hold polluters accountable and advocate for meaningful change, ultimately protecting the health and well-being of those living in proximity to industrial facilities.
