Long-lived Radio Emission Observed Near Supermassive Black Hole
Astronomers have identified a rare cosmic phenomenon in the galaxy SDSS J110546.07+145202.4, where a radio transient has been emitting intense radio waves for multiple years, defying the typical short-lived nature of such events. Radio transients, fleeting bursts of radio radiation linked to extreme astrophysical processes near supermassive black holes, usually fade within days or weeks. However, this newly observed source has remained unusually luminous for years, marking the first known instance of a long-duration radio transient associated with a galactic center.
The discovery challenges existing models of transient radio emissions, which are often attributed to explosive events like supernovae or tidal disruption flares. Researchers suggest the prolonged activity in SDSS J110546.07+145202.4 may stem from sustained interactions between the supermassive black hole and its surrounding environment, such as accretion disk instabilities or jet-driven processes. This finding opens new avenues for studying the dynamic behavior of black holes and the extreme conditions governing their host galaxies, offering insights into how energy is generated and released in the universe’s most energetic systems.
