London's Ultra Low Emission Zone associated with accelerated lung growth in children, study finds
A landmark study led by researchers at Queen Mary University of London has found that the introduction of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has been strongly linked to accelerated lung growth in more than 3,400 children. By analysing health and environmental data before and after the ULEZ’s implementation, the team identified significant improvements in air quality that correlated with measurable gains in lung function among the young participants.
The research, which tracked children across a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, showed that reductions in key pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter were associated with a measurable increase in lung capacity. The findings suggest that policy measures aimed at curbing vehicle emissions can have a direct, positive impact on the respiratory health of children, providing evidence that environmental interventions can translate into tangible health benefits for vulnerable populations.
The study’s authors emphasise that these results underscore the importance of continued investment in air‑quality initiatives.
