Adhesives are indispensable in electronics, automotive components and a wide range of consumer products, yet their strong bonds often complicate repair and recycling efforts. A research team from the University of Osaka has created a prototype light‑responsive adhesive that can be selectively detached from an illuminated surface without leaving any visible residue. The film can be re‑bonded by heating, and a second ultraviolet wavelength restores its molecular interactions, allowing the adhesive to be reused.
The new material relies on photo‑induced changes in its chemistry to release the bond cleanly when exposed to a specific light wavelength. After removal, the adhesive can be reheated to re‑establish a strong bond, and a subsequent UV exposure resets the molecular structure for the next cycle. This approach could reduce waste and improve the sustainability of products that rely on adhesives, offering a practical solution for industries that require both durable bonding and easy disassembly.
