Libya: Drone Strike Sets Oil Refinery Ablaze Amid Election Stalemate

The United Nations Security Council convened to review Libya’s escalating crisis, where a stalled political process has postponed planned elections and intensified armed clashes. The meeting also addressed recent drone attacks that set fire to a major oil refinery, further destabilising the country’s already fragile infrastructure.

During the session, an activist highlighted how the convergence of extreme heat, water scarcity, and environmental shocks with political fragmentation, armed conflict and weak institutions creates a complex peace‑and‑security challenge. The council urged urgent measures to address both the immediate security threats and the underlying governance gaps that hinder Libya’s recovery.

The council’s deliberations underscore the urgency of a coordinated international response to restore stability, secure critical infrastructure, and pave the way for a credible electoral process in Libya.
