LG smart TVs log and upload data even when offline, report finds

LG’s latest OLED televisions, including the G5 model, have been found to collect and transmit extensive user data even when the devices are offline or in standby mode, according to a report released by the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus. The investigation, conducted in collaboration with Level1Techs and independent security researchers, involved hands‑on testing of retail‑unit LG OLEDs. Packet captures revealed that the TVs continuously scan local Wi‑Fi networks for nearby hardware, such as smartphones and other connected devices, and log the results for transmission to LG’s servers.

In addition to network scanning, the smart TVs were observed to activate built‑in microphones to record ambient audio and to employ audio‑ and video‑sampling algorithms that identify the content being viewed across all inputs. The data is then uploaded regardless of the user’s online status, raising privacy concerns about the extent of surveillance embedded in modern home entertainment equipment. LG has not yet commented on the findings, while consumer‑privacy advocates urge greater transparency and the option to disable such telemetry features.
