Learner Drivers Await 20-Week Wait for Driving Tests
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has been tasked with cutting the average waiting period for driving‑test appointments to seven weeks. The target follows a review of the agency’s performance, which highlighted that, at the time, many applicants faced waiting times that stretched well beyond the statutory 12‑week maximum. The new benchmark is part of a broader government effort to improve the efficiency of the road‑testing system and to reduce the backlog that has accumulated over the past year.
To meet the seven‑week goal, the DVSA is expanding its testing capacity by adding more test centres and increasing the number of available test slots each week. The agency is also investing in digital booking tools to streamline the appointment process and reduce administrative delays. Early reports suggest that the first phase of the expansion has already cut average wait times by roughly 20 %, bringing the current average down to just over nine weeks.
If the DVSA can sustain its current rate of improvement, the seven‑week target should be achievable by the end of the year. Meeting this deadline will ease the pressure on prospective drivers and help the government maintain public confidence in the road‑testing system.
