Laser technology aims to recover uranium from Paducah waste storage
Outside the small town of Paducah, Kentucky, thousands of storage cylinders hold uranium waste from a closed nuclear enrichment plant. The material, largely considered a by‑product of the 1970s and 1980s enrichment program, remains in the region’s underground vaults and is a potential source of economically valuable fissile material.
Global Laser Enrichment (GLE) has announced plans to use a laser‑based reprocessing technique to recover uranium from the waste. The company’s method, which relies on precise laser pulses to selectively ionize uranium atoms, could allow the material to be converted into usable fuel or other industrial products. GLE’s proposal includes a pilot project to demonstrate the technology’s feasibility on a small scale before scaling up to handle the full inventory of cylinders.
If successful, the project could reduce the volume of hazardous waste stored in Paducah and provide a new supply of uranium for the nuclear industry. The initiative has attracted attention from both regulatory agencies and environmental groups, which are monitoring the potential impacts on the local ecosystem and the safety of the reprocessing operations.
