Labour defence committee chair urges UK to meet 3% GDP defence spending target after Argentine threats

Labour defence committee chair Tan Dhesi warned that recent statements by Argentine President Javier Milei, who threatened the Falkland Islands, underscore the urgency for the United Kingdom to raise its defence budget. Dhesi argued that the comments highlight the need for the government to meet its pledged target of allocating 3 percent of gross domestic product to defence spending by 2030, a goal he says should be accelerated in response to heightened geopolitical tension.

He added that the push for increased funding remains clouded by mixed messages from the prime minister, who initially appeared to confirm that the 2030 target would be achieved, only for Downing Street to later backtrack. Dhesi called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to resolve the uncertainty and implement the spending increase without delay, emphasizing that a clear commitment is essential for national security.
